Thus "Punjab" can be translated as "(the) five waters" - and hence the land of the five rivers, known as the Indus, Ravi, Satluj, Chenab and Jhelum rivers; the last four rivers being the tributaries of the Indus River.

Other important cities include Multan, Faisalabad, Sialkot, and Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, and many others. The province is home to five rivers: the Indus, Sutlej, Chenab, Jhelum, Ravi. Nearly 60% of Pakistan's population lives in the Pakistani Punjab, it is the nation's only province that provide electricity to various other provinces and regions like Balochistan, North-West Frontier Province, Sindh and Azad Kashmir, and contains the federal enclave of the national capital city at Islamabad.
